SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT

Navaid has dedicated the most recent years of his life to understanding radicalization to violence and its root causes.

From attending seminars and workshops, to getting private training, and self studying countering-violent extremism literature, he has become a recognized expert amongst his peers. His expertise is in understanding Muslim extremist rhetoric, the history of Muslim extremist groups and movements, and the prevention of Muslim radicalization to violence through holistic programming and mentoring.

In 2017 Navaid served as an expert witness for the British Columbia Supreme Court in the case of Regina V Othman Ayed Hamdan, and this is what the honourable judge had to say:

“Mr. Aziz was an excellent witness. His approach to translation and understanding of the meaning of posts was principled and based on years of study of the Arabic language and Islam. His evidence was given in a manner that was entirely impartial. The information he provided about Islam, the different Sunni schools of thought, and the religious views of Islamist extremists was of great assistance to the Court. He acknowledged many instances where contentious terms in the posts should be interpreted as a Salafist jihadist would understand the language. He also identified posts where the meaning is ambiguous or consistent with mainstream Muslim views, rather than with the Salafist jihadist meaning. He identified posts that used language from the Quran or Hadiths and provided background and context for the interpretation of those posts. I accept the evidence of Mr. Aziz regarding translation of the Arabic language and prefer his approach to, and conclusions about the interpretation of Mr. Hamdan’s posts over the RCMP’s approach and opinions.”
